CIN@CLE: ‘He is in!’ In what?

On the game’s opening play, Cincinnati’s Charlie Jones rips through Cleveland’s kickoff defense and reaches the 10 before Browns’ special teamer Tony Brown II (38) covers enough ground to knock him off balance.

Jones wobbles the remaining distance and flings himself at the pylon, believing he only needs to be in the general vicinity of that puffy orange pedestal to get credit for a touchdown. And despite landing fully out of bounds, never contacting the end zone, Jones’s faith is rewarded. Yet another no-touch touchdown. Hocus Bogus Rating: 4.5

HOU@GB: Cutting corners

Houston cornerback D’Angelo Ross (37) closes the gap on Green Bay’s Dontayvion Wicks and manages to push him wide of the end zone. His feet never touch it. That’s the job of the defense — keep ball carriers out of the end zone.

Yet because it is perceived that Wicks gouged a portion of the end zone’s airspace before he landed out of bounds, well, lucky him — the break-the-plane rule interprets that act of invisibility worthy of six points. And football fans remain hypnotized into believing that such a ruling makes sense. Rating: 4.5
